The 1916 New Jersey Shark Attacks Location

The Jersey Shore shark attacks of 1916 were a series of shark attacks along the coast of New Jersey, in the United States, between July 1 and 12, 1916, in which four people were killed and one injured. This is the Matawan Creek location from those attacks. The book / movie JAWS was based on these infamous shark attacks.

  2. Those dead fish are called American Shad and a lot of them die off during their runs, we have them here on the West Coast and towards the end of their run the river is full of dead fish

  3. Bull sharks mate and give birth in brackish water, often going up rivers to find suitable nursery for their babies. Males often bite the females tails from behind during courtship… I wonder if there could have been some misplaced aggression from young males, or irritation from birthing mothers that lead to the attacks.

  4. My great great uncle was killed by a shark when jetty jumping in Australia, it’s always interesting but extremely saddening to hear stories like this, beautifully well constructed video

  5. This was an excellent video and well told by you. It was very interesting to see the family graves. As a youth I remembered hearing about this story so to see those actual locations in your video made it full circle for me. Thank you!

  6. As a kid I was helping to clean out my grandmothers house and found a book by, I believe, the US navy on shark attacks. The Jersey shore report was one of the first. Shocking.
