  1. Dad worked PNSY for many years in peacetime. I had a short shipfitter apprenticeship at PNSY at 19 years old, but at that time there wasn't much new shipbuilding so moved on to Shell Chemical in Thorofare NJ

  2. I remember taking severral tours of BB62 including at one at her recommisioning for Viet Nam. My father gave me the tour as we were there as guests of the Navy Department for recommisioning.

  3. I had the great pleasure of meeting a plank owner from BB61. All the awards and plaques hung on his family rm wall. We talked about his decision to join the navy in 42 and then battle in the pacific. His daughter mentioned, he can talk your ear off. Not at all. It was one of the greatest events in my life. Go Navy! God Bless to all the sailors in the US Navy and BB62!!

  4. My Dad, Edgar P Hill, joined Navy in 1940 and first served on USS Lexington CV2, and also was later a plank owner of USS New Jersey BB62 for her 1st commisioning in Philly and served on the Jersey till near wars end in 1945. Prior to that he was sunk on carrier Lexington CV2, then sunk again on Yorktown about a month later. After Yorktown served on USS Alabama. Crazy from South Pacific to North Atlantic and back to South Pacific!

  5. Finger Lakes NY here.
    Had goosebumps for 3 hours.
Please have a governors' ball to honor all involved. Maybe late summer or early autumn.
Hosted by Govs of NJ & PA.
Must have cake. Cut the cake and Govs depart.
Black tie optional, hi vis life jackets required.

  6. Wish so badly that I had the money to travel from Aus to USA to visit BB-62.

Heard from my grandfather about it when he was younger, apparently he spent some time on it. From what he said his plane went down and NJ picked him and his crew up.

  8. So cool to be able to follow this from 1700 miles away. You are doing the lords work in preserving naval history for future generations, and possibly for renlistment. I never thought, being born/raised in colorado, that I would have such a fascination with a damn battleship. Ryan, that's down to you. You are the best steward that ship could have asked for, and we all appreciate your dedication, and your fascination. Same to all the people making this happen. Thank you for taking care of that gorgeous old gal.

  9. What boat was it with #72 across the entry from you? Most searches I do come up with CVN72 or Carrier Lincoln (NOT IT), but one I found was USS-Mahan DDG-72.

  10. I liked the movies that the both of you were talking about. I just got a copy of Greyhound and it is excellent. I found Midway 2019 to be far better than the Midway 1977. The 1977 movie was filled with a lot of BS fluff and Heston's part was horrible.

  11. 1:30:06 so that military RORO is normally in Baltimore? Very interesting .. I guess they knew the bridge was gonna be taken out! Also interesting that the MSM makes no mention of the other military RORO's trapped in Baltimore. Now looks definitely like a planned destruction of the Key Bridge. Attack happened early Tuesday at 1:30 am and here is this Baltimore based RORO sitting in Philadelphia the next day. Foreknowledge indeed

  12. I want to send a huge Thank You, to McAllister tugs & all their crewmembers involved in safely moving this wonderful ship for her dry-docking. Their expertise was apparent during both moves. Hopefully, you'll also be taking her back home when the work is completed.

  13. We were one pier away from her at Norfolk in 1968 when she was headed for Nam, spent a Sunday afternoon roaming her decks, quite a thrill at the time. I've really enjoyed visiting all her nooks and crannies on this channel.

  14. I always forget how powerful those tugs are, it takes these big, big ships to put into perspective, just how "hot rod" they are to the naval world.
1:28:11 that's the Fox helicopter, online (YouTube search for "new jersey" and sort by newest) there's bird's eye view of the docking procedure. Worth watching the two streams in parallel.

  15. My grandfather was the shop steward in building 17 where all things sheet metal were made for these battleships. Back then the Navy yard was bustling as if it were it’s own town.

  16. I watched the Jersey fire those guns in Beirut WOW the shockwave at 3 miles oversea was like getting hit the face with an overstuffed sofa cushion by a 400 pound body builder swinging it full force you could see the shock wave come across the water
