January 25th, 2024 New Jersey/Delaware Bay Fishing Report with Jim Hutchinson, Jr.
Just 36 days from the opening day of New Jersey’s «outback» striper fishery, and many of the local captains we’ve spoken to in recent days are anxiously awaiting that spring run (see more about striped bass management this week at the 19:40 mark of this week’s video). At this point in the month, blackfish, or tautog, is still the top saltwater game in town , as is white perch for those hitting the backwaters with bloods, shrimp or killies. A quick intro into the latest action, with (4:30) information on where we’ll be this weekend including Jenni’s (6:10) NY Boat Show tour of the best news boats at Javits Center. A winter sales event (12:30) in Seaside, followed by a trip out to the mountains (14:05) and a look at the freshwater options in the tristate region. If you’re heading someplace warm (17:20) this winter don’t forget to bring your hometown colors, but certainly the big news this week (19:40) is the 5-hour meeting of the ASMFC Atlantic Striped Bass Management Board on Wednesday, January 24, 2024. We’ve got all the details on the approved recreational and commercial measures, including New Jersey’s Striped Bass Bonus Program.

As always, thank you Jim for all that you do to bring issues to light, and bring the info to us. I am a little confused as to the end of the year for striper season – everyone was stating you can’t harvest them after the first of the year. Was that true for the 0-3 mile line as well? I was under the impression the marine digest stated ‘no closed season’ for the Atlantic. Thanks for your help.
You are one of the few , if not the only one , that attends all of the fisheries meetings and you never miss the details . 5 hours is a long time to sit through that type of meeting . Great report !
What a bunch of BS that hook and line guys are responsible for overharvesting.
Excellent information video
What gets me mad is I follow the rules the law and do what is best for the fishery by getting my Salt water license and doing what's right for the environment yet you have those that just don't give a damn and get away with it how can that be? where are the ECPO and why are they not for proper fishing documents ?
I enjoyed the boat show 2024 boats you gave us a clip on great job Jenni. We need more women like Jenni to work with The Fisherman Magazine.
Jenni's so wholesome
The BULLSHIT has got to stop as soon as possible
Shut it down for 5 years for all rec and commercial especially gill nets and shut down omega.. Pay the commercial guys a living wage until then.. Not taking any food from the commercial community.. Gotta stop.. The chesapeake is a dead zone.. It's coming for everything north if it doesn't stop
The world record will be safe for quite some time
Party Boat Captain's like "Don't look at us…blame the round goby and recreational fishermen"….
Maybe everyone should practice good catch n release techniques. For example if you’re fighting a COW for awhile don’t just toss it back… sit with her and revive her till she kicks off on her OWN. Maybe they should require striped bass fisherman to take a course on the Striped Bass. I think that’d be pretty cool. And if you don’t, then you probably shouldn’t be fishing for them to begin with.
Could we hatchery raise striped bass and release fingerlings or 1 year olds to address either poor fertilization rates/growth to fingerlings due to environmental conditions? 1 year olds would address preditation by small fish like gobies. The reverse of cutting back on harvest it to increase young of the year. Hatcheries??
Shut the fisheries down for Bass. Make them a game fish. And no one believes that the recreational anglers are responsible for the killing off of the fish.
maybe a good PR campaign to save SB fishery like they did for Chilean bass…get the general public to see there is a problem so they don't order SB at restaurants. A few well executed commercials could go a long way to helping reduce need for large commercial harvest of this species. maybe showing anglers including young kids catching SB and pull on the ole heart strings.
Absolute BS that it’s the recreational guys. Targeting Bass or not the commercial draggers and gill netters kill everything in their path!!!!
Why can’t we make striped bass a gamefish in all east coast states? I know for some it’s their livelihood but considering how well snook have done with that in Florida maybe we should consider something similar.
