A lovely winter afternoon railfanning at Union, New Jersey. NJT/CSX/NS
With 50° plus temperatures I couldn’t resist going out and soaking in this beautiful afternoon at a famous New Jersey hotspot, Union, NJ station. We see lots of New Jersey Transit trains, including three different military units. We also see several CSX and NS hotshots. Although I didn’t see as many freight trains as in a past visit, but it was still a most enjoyable day, and Union is a very relaxing place to railfan. All trains are identified. Narration with graphics.

I love the gauntlet tracks at these stations.
I see the Tropicana juice train pretty often as it uses the old Reading (current CSX) New York Short line which my house backs up to. I still remember in the late 80's and early 90's when they were Orange boxcars and then the white Tropicana boxcars were introduced
Nice action. Nice salute to military. ????
Nice! 288 also actually originates out of Rossville, TN not Rossport.
nice action! I fanned the Lehigh Line on Sunday afternoon, another beautiful day. when there isn’t a heritage unit, 23G is always the highlight of the afternoon (scheduled out of Croxton 3:45). always so many engines and the leader (on Sunday) had an awesome P5!
Good thing you were there Thursday and not Wednesday…switching issues at Hunter had RVL service cut back to Cranford with subtstitute buses to from Newark to Union, Roselle Park, and Cranford.
Great video! How to use source information on the freight trains?
The windows are not dirty. There is a major problem with the polycarbonate windows installed on these cars. What appears to be dirt are tiny cracks in the window coating. One option NJT is looking at is replacing all the windows but that can cost upwards of 8 million bucks. Another option – NJT is working with Rutgers engineering department to see if there is some way of restoring the existing windows.
This was my boyhood homeland. Hillside-Union !
How do people know where these freight trains originate and to their destination?
